Britney Spears, who was criticized for lipsynching at the 2007 awards, shine in the best pop video and best female video categories in MTV MVA this past weekend. The singer, who took part in an opening comedy sketch with Superbad actor Jonah Hill, politely thanked God, her children and her record label for each of her award wins. "Wow, thank you, I'm in shock right now. I was not expecting this," she said after accepting the shiny Moonman statue for video of the year at the end of the night. "This is such an honor to have this award right now." Wearing a glittering silver dress and her hair in soft blonde waves, she posed for photos with her three trophies for her song "Piece of Me", accompanied by manager Larry Rudolph.
Those in attendance defended Spears after her turbulent year during which former husband Kevin Federline was granted custody of the couple's two children, Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, in January. Hill, her comedic co-star for the night, described her as "a really great person", while Paris Hilton, who presented Spears with an award, said to her: "I love you. I miss you. And it's so good to see you."
British comedian Russell Brand hosted the show, and appeared to annoy some of the celebrities in attendance, although he did receive cheers for backing US Presidential candidate Barack Obama. He said: "As a representative of the global community, a visitor from abroad, I don't want to come across a little bit biased, but could I please ask of you, people of America, please elect Barack Obama, please, on behalf of the world.
"Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president. But I know America to be a forward thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years. We were very impressed. We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors."
Brand was later forced to apologize for his mockery of promise rings, worn by the Jonas Brothers, after R&B singer Jordan Sparks called him a "slut" when she came on stage. Brand said: "I didn't mean to take it lightly" before adding, "a little sex once and a while never hurt anybody." British singer Leona Lewis also performed on the show, which was broadcast live across the US, and also featured Christina Aguilera in her first televised performance since giving birth to son Max in January. Kanye West closed the show, a year after he vowed never to appear at the VMAs again because he did not win an award despite several nominations.
And for the record, Russell Brand is a copycat. The joke about a "retarded president" is old and was originally made by Chris Rock at MSG New York. Brand should come up with better joke. Frankly, this British jerk did not worth all the hypes.
Her first child, son Max, is just 9 months old, but Christina Aguilera is already thinking about baby No. 2. "Absolutely, we'll definitely have more kids," she told People at the Africa Rising concert in London yesterday. How many? "I don't know. We'll play it by ear." For now, the singer, 27, is enjoying her time with Max. "I'm in love with my life," she says, although parting with her son to perform can be a drag.
